Local Students Represent EECA on Youth Tour to Washington, D.C.

Egyptian Electric Cooperative Association (EECA) is proud to announce the return of two outstanding students who represented the cooperative and their communities during the 2025 Youth Tour to Washington, D.C., held June 16–23.

Madison Voss of Murphysboro High School and Harlan Whiteford of Marion High School were selected to participate in the all-expenses-paid trip, joining over 2,000 students from 44 states for a week packed with learning, leadership, and unforgettable experiences. Sponsored by 25 Illinois electric and telephone cooperatives, the Illinois delegation included 48 students this year.

“This trip is so much more than sightseeing,” said Brooke Guthman, EECA’s Member Services Manager. “It’s about showing students what it means to be a leader – and how their voices matter.”

During their trip, Voss and Whiteford explored major landmarks like Gettysburg, the U.S. Capitol, the White House, and the National Mall. “The Youth to Washington Tour was one of the most incredible experiences I’ve ever been on,” Voss said. “We toured new places every day, and I made friends I’ll cherish forever. I’m so grateful my coop gave me this opportunity.”

A unique feature of the Youth Tour was the Chip ‘n’ Pop Coop, a student-run cooperative where participants simulate real coop governance. Whiteford served on the board of directors, and both students gained valuable insight into how cooperatives operate and serve their members by participating.
