January’s bitterly cold temperatures and extended icy conditions led to increased energy usage and higher bills.
As you review your most recent bill, which reflects Jan 1 – Feb 1 usage, please remember that your balance is directly related to the amount of electricity you used.
For example, no matter what type of heating system you have, your system works to make up the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures. In January, the average outdoor temperature was only 29°F. If you set your thermostat to 69°F, your system had to maintain a 40-degree temperature difference. In comparison, the temperature difference in summer months is typically much smaller, requiring less energy to be used.
We’ve received several inquiries about possible errors in meter readings, and we understand the inclination to assume the meter is to blame for a high bill—but that is rarely the cause. More information on this can be found here: https://eeca.coop/energy-efficiency/usage-concerns/
In our SmartHub app, you can view your daily usage compared to the daily temperature. If you haven’t signed up yet, visit eeca.coop/smarthub to get started. Each month this information is also published on your bill for your review. (Example below)
Here are some ways to manage unexpected high bills:
- If you feel unable to pay the full amount, please contact us to set up a payment arrangement.
- We have a PrePay program where you pay on your meter as you go. Payments can be made by cash or card. Call our office at (800) 606-1505 to learn more about this option and sign up.
- We offer budget billing, which evens out your monthly bill by using your 12-month average to create a more consistent payment. This would help make future budgeting easier, but wouldn’t help with the bill you just received. **Please note: This is not a discounted method; it’s just a different way to pay.** Additional information and qualifications can be found here: https://eeca.coop/member-services/my-account/ways-to-pay-your-bill/
- The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps with home heating bills for members who qualify. Learn more here: https://eeca.coop/member-services/home-assistance/
